The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
