The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's decision was the possibility of his transfer to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President President Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. Lula was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
